In 2004, Daniel Brockhurst and Victoria Wallis completed the Marathon des Sables – a 150 mile, self sufficiency, foot race across the Sahara Desert. As part of the training for this event Daniel spent a long time researching the various food products on the market in an attempt to get his back pack as light as possible, whilst maintaining a good nutritious, filling diet
It was important to carry enough calories to match the energy output for an event of this magnitude. On top of this – and some might say more importantly – it had to be edible, easy on the body, and taste good!
The research enabled him to head out to the desert with a reasonable light kit bag (9.5kg) carrying in excess of 20,000 calories. He completed the event having not suffered from hunger or food related energy deficiency.
Having combined his professional nutritional knowledge with the information gained from researching the available products, Daniel was able to complete one of the toughest foot races in the world without running out of energy or losing weight. His recovery between daily stages was good. His salt levels and general hydration remained excellent throughout. All in all this was a major factor to him finishing the event in 37 hours.
